I discovered it last year during a self-imposed reading project to read a bunch of short stories that won past Hugo or Nebula awards. Then I tried The Seventh Bride by Ursula Vernon (she uses the pen name T. I couldn’t get past the first page or two of any book that I picked up. Harris.superimposes the books she read and loved onto the landscape she witnesses-and is one of the most compelling things about her style. ![]() While much of Harris’ motivation for going somewhere new to expand consciousness and increase a sense of connection to the world-is common in the genre, her work belongs to the subset of writers who go beyond leisure traveler into something more like explorer (an anachronistic profession she longs to join), largely by virtue of the effort it takes to propel herself down this road less traveled, a trek riddled with challenges logistical, physical, and bureaucratic. ![]() ![]() I don’t think I’ve ever seen that combination done so well before, and I really, truly loved it. It’s a heartwarming, inspiring story, with a strong, positive representation of both women and faith. Without meaning to, I pretty much one-more-chaptered myself all the way to the end and I have zero regrets about that. I read MARY UNDERWATER in one sitting because I couldn’t stop. ![]() I love the way her aunt steps into her life, building a safe relationship, and encouraging Mary, but also talking straight. I love the relationships between Mary and her teachers, Sister Eu and Mr. Joan of Arc both in her narrative and in biographical snippets between chapters. The way her timidity blossoms into confidence. I am super interested in stories that show young women and STEM, and a girl building a submarine seemed too cool to pass up. ![]() ![]() The cover and description of MARY UNDERWATER totally had me hooked. ![]() ![]() Kirra and Reef, along with the entire McKenna family, are thrown into a race to stop a shadowy villain who is not only threatening a girl's life, but appears willing to unleash one of the largest disasters Alaska has ever seen. In order to save her, the man must use his knowledge as a mechanical engineer to do the kidnapper's bidding or she will die.
